Sunrise and sunset times, civil, nautical and astronomical twilights

Sunrise and sunset occur when the sun is above or below the horizon. There are three types of twilight when the sun is below the horizon:

• Civil twilight, from 0° to 6° below the horizon, when only the brightest planets or stars are visible.
• Nautical twilight, from 6° to 12°, when it feels like night and second magnitude stars are visible.
• Finally, astronomical twilight, from 12° to 18°, when faint stars appear.

This is followed by astronomical night (dark night), when diffuse astronomical objects such as galaxies and nebulae can be observed with a nacked eye.
